The European Union has provided another euro24 million ($29 million) in food and medical aid for drought-stricken north African nations.
EU Development Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva told a news conference Wednesday the aid for the semiarid Sahel region will help prevent a catastrophe because the situation is "getting worse by the day."
The EU money for Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso and northern Nigeria will prioritize food aid to malnourished children and pregnant and nursing women. The bulk of the funds will go to Niger and Chad. The EU has already given euro30 million to the region this year.
